Hemoglobin (Hgb)

Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The hemoglobin test is almost always done as part of complete blood count (CBC) and most often to test for anemia and bleeding.

Reference Values
Male: 13.8 to 17.2 g/dl
Female: 12.1 to 15.1 g/dl

Clinical Information
Lower than normal hemoglobin may be due to: anemia, bleeding, erythropoietin deficiency (from kidney disease), nutritional deficiencies of iron, folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6.
Higher than normal hemoglobin may be due to: congenital heart disease, cor pulmonale, pulmonary fibrosis, and polycythemia vera.

Intepretation
The hemoglobin level should always be evaluated in combination with the complete blood count (CBC)
